Getting rid of cold feet costs less than you think! We'd like to share some insights with you about residential construction that might help you serve your clients better. Our plan is to send you one suggestion each month, based on knowledge we've gained from building and renovating upscale homes in New England. These suggestions are intended for architects only. We hope you find them valuable. If you have comments or questions, please send them to me and I'll do my best to answer right away. If you're planning a bathroom renovation, the surprisingly low cost of installing and operating electric radiant heat will make it a hot topic this winter. There are two types of radiant heat: wire mats and individual cables. Both are installed in the thin set mortar under the ceramic floor tile. Wire mats are slightly easier to install. Cables are slightly more adaptable to a variety of spaces. Some systems are even rated for installation under the shower floor. Whether you choose wire mat or cable, electric radiant heat costs about 70% less to install than a hydronic system, with operating costs of less than a dollar a day when in use. It only takes a few hours to install electric radiant heat, making it a luxurious and affordable addition to any New England bathroom renovation.
